Intent
At Wrangle Primary Academy, we follow the Lincolnshire Agreed Syllabus to teach Religious Education as we want our children to be knowledgeable about a range of faiths and beliefs. We promote curiosity because we believe that children need a safe space to explore their own developing views whilst exploring the religious, spiritual or philosophical ways of seeing, living, thinking, believing and belonging. Our R.E. curriculum is aspirational for all: teachers follow the units within the syllabus which cover Christianity, Islam and Hinduism (the three main religions in Lincolnshire). Through each unit, children will learn about a range of religions and world views. They will develop their resilience and be able to identify, investigate and respond to a variety of issues. The intent is to ensure that children are excited about R.E. with opportunities such as visitor events or visits to places of worship (where possible) to enthuse and interest our children helping them to understand the relevance of R.E. in today’s modern world.
Implementation
Our R.E. curriculum follows the Lincolnshire Locally Agreed Syllabus and is designed by the Diocese of Lincoln Board of Education. We teach our sessions weekly and ensure that lessons build upon prior learning and develop skills year upon year through our two-year rolling curriculum. At Wrangle Primary Academy, R.E. provides a balance between three disciplines – believing, thinking and living. Expertly designed by the Diocese of Lincoln, these disciplines will be woven through each unit with the ‘God’ and ‘Being Human’ units focus on concepts and skills relating to believing and the ‘Community’ and ‘Life Journey’ units focussing on living.
We offer a wide range of learning opportunities about the world’s religions including deepening understanding of the origin of religions, their key stories and teachings. Throughout EYFS and both key stages, emphasis on personal growth and community cohesion is evident, allowing for personal development for the children from EYFS to the end of KS2. Learning opportunities include exploring religious artefacts, paintings and texts, gaining first-hand knowledge through debate, visiting places of worship and speaking to believers of various faiths.
The R.E. curriculum is aspirational for all groups of learners as strategies are put in place to support children, enabling them to reach their full potential. These strategies are guided groups, pre-teaching of vocabulary, scaffolds and word banks and differentiation of teaching and activities. This ensures all children, including SEND, are able to fully achieve the outcome of each lesson.
Impact
As a result of our broad and balanced R.E. curriculum, our children will leave Wrangle Primary Academy with a better understanding of the religions that make up the UK landscape. Our children will be more informed about their position in the world and will be able to talk confidently about their wellbeing, moral and cultural development for the society in which they live.
