Physical Education

Intent

At Wrangle Primary Academy, we believe that Physical Education (PE) enables children to be curious about trying new sports and learning new skills which are essential to developing their physical and emotional well-being. Teachers follow an aspirational and progressive sequence of learning which builds on knowledge and skills of a range of sporting activities such as invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding games along with athletics, gymnastics, orienteering and swimming. We aim to teach children to be resilient and able to co-operate with others as part of a team, understanding the fairness of rules whilst being enthused and excited to try new sports.

Implementation

Children of Wrangle Primary Academy participate in two high-quality PE lessons each week which cover two sporting disciplines every half term. In the Autumn and Summer Term, one of these lessons is Swimming in our onsite pool. Extra time is allocated in the Summer Term to support any year 6 swimmers who have not yet achieved 25 metres to further develop their swimming skills and water safety ability prior to secondary transition. We are passionate about ensuring every child learns the vital life skill of swimming by the time they leave us. Our long term plan maps out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. In addition to this, children are invited to attend competitive sporting events with local schools in the area as part of the Boston Sports Partnership. Several opportunities throughout the year are provided for children to participate in enrichment activities including after school clubs (for example archery, dodgeball or swimming).

Impact

Our aim is for our children to leave Wrangle Primary Academy with a clear understanding of the positive impact of physical exercise on their own physical fitness and mental wellbeing, ensuring they continue to lead a healthy lifestyle. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
