Geography

Intent

At Wrangle Primary Academy, our intent is to inspire children’s curiosity and help them to gain a knowledge and understanding about the world in which we live and how it has evolved. We make sure children know (and remember) where places in the world are and how to use a map to find them. This supports them in further deepening their understanding of concepts like trade and migration. We want children to know and understand the difference between physical and human geographical features. We want our children to know how to collect, analyse and interpret geographical data. We want them to have a passion for Geography and develop their desire to explore the world in which we live in whilst understanding the world and their place in it. As a result of our aspirational Geography curriculum, children will be resilient – being challenged to take on new learning whilst understanding that they cannot be experts straight away. They will be excited to have opportunities to experience geography first-hand. They will study our locality and attend trips to geographically significant places.

Implementation

Our carefully planned curriculum has been organised to cover objectives linked to Locational and Place Knowledge; Human and Physical Geography; Skills and Fieldwork and Enquiry. As each year group covers these four areas, learning is progressive and supports teachers to retrieve knowledge and skills from previous year groups and build on this to progress the learning of our children. We teach through half-termly enquiry questions (with either a Geography, History or Science focus) and during the Geography enquiries, discreet lessons support the children to be curious about the world around them. A two-year cycle is planned to ensure full coverage of the curriculum. Teachers plan lessons using a variety of sources and geographical information, including maps, diagrams and globes, aerial photos, Google Earth and where relevant fieldwork.

Impact

Our enquiry based Geography curriculum leads children to a conclusion based on the interpretation of the evidence gathered. The impact of our Geography curriculum is measured through retrieval tasks and mini-quizzes throughout a unit and celebrated at the end of a unit through the response to the enquiry question which may be a written response, oral presentation or through another suitable assessment task.

By the time children are ready to leave Wrangle Primary Academy, they should feel prepared for the next stage of their learning in Key Stage 3. We want our children to have a growing knowledge of the world and their place within it and aspire to discover more about the ever-changing world and how they can protect it in the future.
