Science

Intent

The intent of our aspirational Science curriculum at Wrangle Primary Academy is to gain a knowledge, understanding and curiosity about how Science has changed our lives and how it is a vital part of our future. We want our children to have a passion for Science to understand how it impacts our own lives and the world in which we live. Our curriculum encourages resilience through experiences and observing phenomena. Children will be encouraged to recognise patterns and ask their own questions. They will work scientifically when conducting experiments to help them understand more about a process. Learning is fun and exciting: we plan for hands-on learning that will involve active learning and stimulating discoveries.

Implementation

At Wrangle Primary Academy, Science is taught through half-termly units with weekly discreet lessons to ensure the objectives of the National Curriculum are covered. We teach a rolling two-year cycle with some units being the focus enquiry question for the term. The teaching and learning of Science is based on investigation, observation and knowledge. In EYFS, children are taught the science elements as indicated in the statutory framework under the Early Years Goal of the Natural World where they explore the natural world around them, making observations of animals and plants and understanding some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter.

In addition to the knowledge and understanding aspects of the National Curriculum, children develop their scientific enquiry skills through carefully planned investigations which include the correct use of scientific apparatus. Misconceptions are encouraged as key learning points and children’s inquisitive questions are explored in further investigations.

Impact

By the time our children are ready to leave Wrangle Primary Academy, they will be equipped with the knowledge and understanding of the different aspects of Science and will have a natural curiosity to question to world around them and discover how things work.

Assessment in Science at Wrangle Primary Academy is teacher based and formed using a range of strategies including (but not limited to) quizzes, concept cartoons, verbal or written outcomes or presentations.

We hope that children will leave us with a love of Science and an interest in further study and work in this field. We hope our children will become the Scientists of the future!
